  • There are many stereotypes about the character of people in various parts of the United States. In the Northeast and Midwest, people are said to be closed and private. In the South and West, however, they are often thought of as being more open and hospitable.Ask someone from St.Louis where the nearest sandwich shop is, and he or she will politely give you directions.A New Yorker might eye you at first and after deciding it is safe to talk to you, might give you a rather unexpected explanation.A person from Georgia might be very kind about directing you and even suggest some different places to eat.A Texan just might take you to the place and treat you to lunch.
American stereotypes are abundant.New Englanders are often thought of as being friendly and helpful.Southerners are known for their hospitality and warmth.People from the western part of the United States are often considered very outgoing. These differences in character can be traced to different factors such as climate, living conditions, and historical development.
When travelling from place to place, Americans themselves are often surprised at the differing degrees of friendliness in the United States.

  • In 1924, Nordic ski events were held at the first Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France. But the American skiers came home without medals. Norway took most of the medals for cross-country and ski jumping events that year. They did the same for many years after. From 1924 through 1972, the American skiers had no medals to show for their Olympic trips. The U.S. was generally thought to be weak in ski competition
But in 1974 it was discovered that the U. S. record was slightly better than people had been led to believe. And Norway's record was not quite as good. The discovery was a surprise and a delight to American ski fans, but even more so to American skier Anders Haugen. After fifty years, Anders got the medal he should have won back in 1924.
In the ski jump event at Chamonix in 1924, Haugen had scored in fourth place. He had just missed earning a medal. His score was 17. 916, just slightly behind Thorleif Haug of Norway. Haug's score of 18 had won him the bronze medal.
But in 1974, Norway's National Olympic Committee did a check of all final Olympic results. There had been an error in computing Haug's score! So Haugen, now, an elderly man, traveled across the ocean for his award. On September 12, 1974, hewas given a bronze medal in a special ceremony at the Norway Ski Museum.

  • Passage Two Ask any group of parents to describe their eighth graders (八年级学生),and you’ll get a surprising—and often contradictory—range of responses.Eighth graders are often quiet and shy,yet they're often loud and frank. They keep pushing you away, yet they're still deeply influenced by everything you say and do.They can make a perfectly reasonable argument as to why they should be allowed to date, yet they can't seem to understand your perfectly reasonable argument for why they should wait. They want to be individuals, yet they want desperately to fit in. Welcome to the eighth grade!Your child is now a full-grown teenager, and she'll experience great physical, emotional, and intellectual(智力的)changes during this dramatic year.As she moves from childhood to adulthood (成年),she'll begin to look like a young woman, and she'll begin to struggle for the independence of adulthood, for which she's not quite ready yet.Your teenager will experience changes and feel emotions she won't always understand. As a result, she'll sometimes feel a little lost or scared, and often very confused as she struggles to figure out who she is and who she wants to be. That is where you come in.As much as your eighth grader may push you away,as much as you may feel she doesn't want you around, she does want you to be involved in her life. She needs you to know what's happening to her and around her, especially in school where she may face pressure to fit in and where she'll face a curiculum that challenges her developing reasoning skills. As the saying goes, “Little kids, little problems;big kids, big problems.”And your big kid will need you to help her work those problems out.

    ATo criticize eighth graders.

CTo discuss the curent educational policy.

DTo explain how to help eighth graders.
