  • Passage C
I will never forget what my old headmaster taught me when I was only 15 years old.
It was a normal Monday morning, and he was making a speech to the students on important things in life and about devoting ourselves to what is important to us. This is how the story went:
An old man lived in a certain part of London, and he would wake up every morning and go to the subway. He would get the train right to Central London, and then sit at the street corner and beg. He would do this every single day of his life. He sat at the same street corner and begged for almost 20 years. His house was dirty, and the terrible smell came out of the house. The neighbors could not stand (忍受) the smell any more, so they asked the police officers to clear the place. The officers knocked down the door and cleaned the house. There were small bags of money all over the house that he had collected over the years.
The police counted the money, and they soon realized that the old man was a millionaire. They waited outside his house to tell the good news to him. When he arrived home that evening, he was met by one of the officers who told him that there was no need for him to beg any more as he was a rich man now, a millionaire. He said nothing at all. He went into his house and locked the door. The next morning he woke up as usual, went to the subway, got into the train, and sat at the street corner and continued to beg. Obviously, this old man had no great plans, dreams or anything important for his life. We learn nothing from this story other than staying focused on the things we enjoy doing.

  •       Certain people make you feel comfortable when they are around. You spend an hour with them and feel as if you've known them half your life. These people have something in common,And once we know what it is,we can try to do it ourselves.
How is it done? Here are several skills that good talkers have. If you follow the skills, they'll help you put people at their ease, and make friends with them quickly.
First of all, good talkers have asked questions. Almost anyone,no matter how shy he is,will answer a question. One well-known business-woman say,“At business lunches,I always ask people what they did that morning. It'sa common question, but it will get things going,”From there you can move on to other matters—sometimes to really personal questions. And how he answers will let you know how far you can go.
Second, once good talkers have asked questions, they listen to the answers. This point seems clear, but it isn't. Your questions should have a point and help to tell what sort of person you are talking to. And to find out,you really have to listen, carefully and attentively.
Real listening at least means some things. First it means not to change the subject of conversation. If someone sticks to one topic, you can take it as a fact that he's really interested in it. Real listening also means not just listening to words, but to tones of voice. If the voice sounds dull, then,it's time for you to change the subject.
Finally, good talkers know well how to deal with the occasion of parting. If you're saying goodbye, you may give him a firm handshake and say,“I've really enjoyed meeting you.”If you want to see that person again, don't keep it a secret. Let people know what you feel, and they may walk away feeling as if they've known you half their lives.

    2. You'll like to stay with some people ___.

A who have something in common with you.

B when you have met him before.

D from whom you can get necessary and timely help.

  •         For many years,I was convinced that my suffering was due to my size.I believed that when the weight disappeared,it would take old wounds, hurts and rejections with it.
Many weight conscious people also mistakenly believe that changing our bodies will fix everything. Perhaps our worst mistake is believing that being thin equals being loved, being special and being cherished. We fantasize about what it will be like when we reach the longawaited goal. We work very hard to realize this dream. Then,at last,we find ourselves there.
But we often gain back what we have lost. Even so,we continue to believe that next time it will be different. Next time,we will keep it off. Next time, being thin finally fulfill its promise of everlasting happiness,self-worth,and,of course, love.
It took me a long while to realize that there was something more for me to learn about beauty. Beauty standards vary with culture. In Samoa a woman is not considered attractive unless she weighs more than 200 pounds. More importantly,if it's happiness that we want, why not put our energy there rather than on the size of our body? Why not look inside? Many of us try hard to change our body, but in vain. We have to find a way to live comfortably inside our body and make friends with and cherish ourselves. When we change our attitudes toward ourselves, the whole world changes,

    3. According to the author, what is the common view of those who have lost someweight first and gained it back later?

A They feel angry about the regained weight.

B They pay little attention to the regained weight.

C They feel optimistic about future plans on weight control.

D They think they should give up their future plans on weight control.
