  • I recently read about a girl named Hope Elizabeth Stout. After learning more about her life,I got the feeling that she had been named“Hope”for a good reason, something of her life has lived on. In June 2003,Stout was very much like any other 12-year-old girl. She was looking forward to her family's annual beach trip. But a sudden pain in her knee changed everything. After conducting some tests, doctors found that she had bone cancer. Stout began to receive painful treatments. She never lost hope and believed that in the end,she would be able to beat cancer.Unfortunately, the treatments did little to stop the disease from spreading.By November, she was forced to use a wheelchair to get around. Then, something magical happened. It changed many lives In the United States, there is the Make-A-Wish(MAW)foundation.It helps children in need fulfill their wishes. In November 2003,MAW visited Stout and told the girl she could have anything she wanted. Stout thought for a few minutes and then answered,“I am still lucky.I have been to Disney World and swum with dolphins in Mexico.I went to the beach all the time.Did you just say there are 155 kids on your waiting list? Well,my wish is to let their wishes be fulfilled—all 155 of them.” It was hard for MAW to fulfill Stout's wish—it would cost nearly $750,000.However,MAW sprang into action.Newspapers, radio and TV stations shared the story.A local company got the ball rolling with a $25,000 donation. Sadly,Stout didn't live to see the happy ending of this story. She passed away on January 4,2004.After her death, donations poured into the MAW office even faster. On January 16,MAW announced that it had raised $1,116,000—enough to fulfill all 155 wishes. Finally,Stout's wish came true.

  • Strawberries look nice,but light pressure can make them out of shape.Nowadays,there are many young people who are just like strawberries.They easily break down when they face difficulties.They don't know what to do when they are in trouble.They have a common name—strawberry kids. Why are many students so easy to break down?Parents and schools are main reasons.Parents do almost everything for them in their daily life,while schools care more about their grades instead of developing their personality(个性). Liu Yue,13,is from Fujian.His mom hardly criticizes(批评)him and he always feels good about himself. When a teacher criticized him strictly,he felt surprised and sad.He began to doubt his ability. Students should do something to make themselves mentally(心理上)strong.An expert said,“When you are in trouble,don't ask for help too quickly.You should try to deal with problems first by yourself.I also advise you to take an active part in sports and social activities,which can make you mentally strong.” Growing up may be not a happy process.Pains also go along with it.The most important thing is to face the pains bravely and learn from them.

  • A global survey has found that people who live in cities have better hearing than those who live in quietvillages, and scientists now believe that the ear needs exercise to keep in shape.
A team of scientists at the University of Giessen, Germany, have spent over ten years testing the hearing ofmore than 10,000 people around the world. As expected, people exposed(暴露) to very loud noises at work, suchas construction workers, had poor hearing. But the hearing of those living in the quiet countryside, such asfarmers, was just as bad. Orchestral(曾弦乐的) musicians and airline pilots, however, can usually hear wellalthough exposed to noises at work. And there is little difference between people who go to noisy concerts and thosewho do not.
Hearing experts have long believed that long-time exposure to excessively(过度地) loud noises degrades hearing and so industrial standards are based on people's average exposure to sound energy. However, it is the verysudden strong noises that do the most damage, while exposure to continual noises “trains" the ear to put up with it.

    9. What does the underlined word “degrades” in the last paragraph probably mean?

    A Harms.

    B Creates.

    C Tests.

    Dmproves.

  • Reuse is a well-known idea for dealing with electronic waste such as old computers and phones. Manycompanies send used electronic items from the US to developing nations. They claim to be reusing those items, and also helping the developing nations to modernize themselves. However, the truth may be quite different. The Basel Action Network of Seatle, Washington, recently reported that three-quarters of the electronic itemsshipped to Lagos, Nigeria, are in fact broken. As a result, lots of electronic waste is thrown away along rivers androads. Often it is picked by the very poor, who come in contact with toxic(有毒的)things in the broken equipment. Some of those things are especially dangerous to the health of growing children. Richard of the Basel Action Network believes companies in developed nations are actually throwing away theirelectronic waste cheaply, leaving the developing world to deal with the problems it causes.

    A They are used.

B There are too many of them.

Sometimes,my grandparents like to criticize(批评)me.They think that children today have an easy life. Life was very different when they were young and there are many things about my life that they do not understand. They tell me,over and over, how they had to start work at 16.They know that I will go on to university and won't be getting a job until I am 22!They also think that I have too many possessions(财产),such as mobile phones, computers and PSPs.When they were young, they did not have anything like that. What they do not realize is that they cannot compare themselves with children at present time. They had the same kinds of things as the rest of people of their age —so do I.It would be very strange if I only had the possessions that they had when they were my age.
