  • When autumn arrives in the United States and Canada, you can see one of nature’s greatest scenes—the yearly migration(迁徙) of the monarch butterflies(帝王蝶). No other butterfly in the world migrates like the orange and black monarch of North America . They can not live for long periods in cold weather. So each autumn around October, the butterflies travel up to 3,000 kilometers south to spend winter. Some even fly to the mountains of Mexico. It usually takes the butterflies two months to reach Mexico. When it is warm, they start to back north in the spring. But not one butterfly finishes the whole trip. They lay eggs along the way and die. It might take the monarchs as many as four to five generations(代) to complete the journey all the way back up to Canada, says Sarina Jepsen, who directs the endangered species program for the Xerces Society. The most amazing thing about these butterflies is that they return to the very same trees in Mexico that their great-great-grandparents used the winter before. However, the number of these colorful butterflies has dropped in recent years. The US Fish and Wildlife Sen ice said that nearly a billion monarchs have disappeared from overwintering sites(越冬地点) since 1990, the Washington Post reported, one of the main reasons, experts say, is that farmers have used herbicides(除草剂) on the milkweed(马利筋) plants that these butterflies feed on. ……

  • A zero-waste life is a lifestyle that hardly creates any rubbish. Zero waste was first suggested by a French woman called Bea Johnson. Her idea is: live a life and try not to create any rubbish; use different kinds of ways to save the environment, such as stopping the use of one-off objects; giving unwanted things to others or donating these things to organizations like the Red Cross. A zero-waste life follows the 6R rule—Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recycle and Rot. Chen Yuan, 27, is deeply interested in this idea . She and her boyfriend Joe have lived in Beijing for many years. Over August-October when Chen followed the rule of zero waste 6R, she and her boyfriend both produced only two cans of rubbish. Now the couple have opened a small shop in Beijing, where they use wood products to take the place of plastic ones and cloth bags printed with environmental logos. The store also has second-hand books and CDs to make the best of the used things. The zero-waste lifestyle is not for ascetics(苦行僧). It is just around us. Chen expects some of her friends to join her on the road to zero waste.

  • It’s been over a year since COVID-19 first appeared and the virus continues to be a problem in many parts of the world, scientists have realized the development of vaccines (疫苗) is a solution to the pandemic . A global effort to vaccinate as many people as possible would be needed, since vaccines typically take years to develop. On Dec 2, 2020, the first COVID vaccine, the Pfizer vaccine, was approved (批准) by UK health department. However, these vaccines must be stored at very low temperatures, which is not possible everywhere. In response, Chinese companies like Sinopharm and Sinovac have developed vaccines that can be kept at normal temperatures. Now, vaccines are being rolled out all over the world, with millions of people being vaccinated every day. In China, 285 million vaccine doses (剂量) had been given so far. Meanwhile, the US has given out 247 million doses. The UK now stands at 50 million doses. Although there have been rumors about vaccines being unsafe, most of people seem to realize the importance of vaccination for building mass immunity (群体免疫) in order to stop the virus from spreading. The world has come to understand that the vaccines will protect us. Therefore, sharing vaccines has become a key factor of staying safe and healthy worldwide. Unfortunately, not everyone can get the vaccine yet. Children below the age of 16 can’t be vaccinated because they have not yet been tested on them. Those who have a history of vaccine allergies (过敏) shouldn’t get it, either.

  • Most scientists agree the Great Sphinx of Giza(吉萨狮身人面像)was built around 2,500 B.C. But John Anthony West says that it's much older. If he's right,“Everything anybody has learned about ancient civilizations would have to be completely revised. ”he told a magazine.
West,a writer and film-maker,first got interested in ancient history after studying the work of a French researcher. The researcher said Egyptian civilization could have developed as early as 30,000 years ago, rather than4,500 years ago,as most experts believe.
West joined a scientist to do research together. Their research suggested that the Sphinx had been worn down(磨损)over the years by water, rather than by sand and wind .
Wait a minute? Water? How could that be? The Sphinx is in the Sahara Desert, which has been dry for 12,000 years! However, before that time,it was very green. If it's true that water wore down the Sphinx,West thinks that it must have been buit centuries earlier.
Whether West is right or wrong,it's important to challenge accepted ideas. That's how science progresses,
West gave some advice for kids:If you are interested in a topic, read everything you can on it. Do your own research. Don't always believe everything your teachers tell you.Ask lots of ques- tions, and find your own answers.
